Meow Tunes 1.2


This new build has the following updates:

  • Added stomp mechanic, activate by pressing left tab.
  • Added speed down/speed up mechanic and polished the music synchronization
  • Added pause menu
  • Fix audio issue: dying sound plays and respawn happens after the sound is over

Obstacles/Challenges:

  • Polishing beat detection and music synchronization was a huge challenge, we were researching between matching the beats based on time calculations (which resulted in offset) and using a MIDI based implementation. We ended up choosing the MIDI implementation as it was more accurate, but required a heavier involvement from the audio team.
  • Another huge challenge was implementing the speed up/slow down mechanic to change the speed of the music in game as a new mechanic for the player.

Feedback from testing and future changes:

  • Bug reports, such as controller support not working properly, music synchronization bug with slow down mechanic, and needed camera improvements. These were all addressed for the next release.
  • The tempo mechanic might have to be rethought. Play testers found it was not smooth and frustrating, and would like it to be limited. We still went ahead with this mechanic to get feedback from more people in the presentation since at this point, we were focusing on finishing our level one implementation and making it all work for the Level One presentation.
  • Some play testers reported this was a fun game to speedrun, therefore we added a stopwatch so they could time themselves instead of using their phone timer.
