Meow Tunes 1.4

Obstacles/Challenges

  1. Figuring out different new ideas and which ideas to discard to make the game more rhythmic
  2. Discussing whether to focus on making the game singleplayer or multiplayer
  3. Implementing a custom way to process MIDI files for beat detection

Feedback

  • Game needs to be more rhythmic
  • We should add more variation and mechanics to the platforms.

Changes

  • Changes to our game mechanic -> since we wanted our game to be more rhythmic, we have changed the experience of the game, these are the changes:
    • Our game is now an auto-scroller, the Cat will move forward by itself, and it is up to the player to move left and right and jump at the right time, based on the rhythm.
    • We've removed the tempo change mechanic. We want the focus of the game to be on the player's sense of rhythm, and developing that skill to complete our levels should be the main goal.
    • As a result, we've also removed the optional stopwatch mechanic.
  • Assets! Our first level includes environment elements and platforms from our art team, and we've redesigned the layout.
  • New music and new MIDI implementation!
    • Our first level now has a Jazz song playing, and the switching of the platforms is less obvious now and requires the player to carefully listen to the beat (we recommend headphones!).
    • On the dev side, we've improved our music implementation: we now use MIDI files to analyze when the platforms should alternate based on the beat. This method has improved our performance and consistency.

We've also attached a video below of our First Level gameplay.
